Big Sandy Pecan Festival Saturday, October 27th

One of the main events at the Pecan Festival set for October 27th in Big Sandy is a bake-off sponsored by the new Heritage Center, downtown. The event is aimed at bringing the community and all service organizations together for one big event.

Set for the last Saturday in October (the 27th), the event is an expansion of the annual Waffle Breakfast sponsored by the Rotary Club and the Fun-N-Fall festival for kids sponsored by New Beginnings fellowship with assistance by the Big Sandy Ministerial Alliance.

Other additions include Live Music, a Health Fair, Vendor and Food booths, an Art show and Car show. Lions Club and Love Big Sandy Project will also participate. Of all the events planned, the Bake-off promised to be the tastiest.

All entries must be homemade (including pie crust) and contain PECANS.

Contestants may enter as many times as you like. Entry fee is either $5 per item or 5 non-perishable food items per item.

Contestants must bring 2 of each entry: 2 pies or cakes; 2 dozen cookies, brownies, or other items that must be cut in pieces. (One will be for the judges and one for a silent auction.)

Please bring a copy of your recipe. They will be the first submissions for the Heritage Center Cook Book.

Items must be in disposable containers.

Entries should be received at the Heritage Center at 11am. Silent Auction will begin at noon. Judging will begin at 1pm. Please return to the Heritage Center at 2pm. Winners of the contest and silent auction will be announced then. Ribbons and certificates will be awarded.

Proceeds from the entry fees and silent auction will benefit the Heritage Center.

Canned goods will be donated to the Big Sandy Agape House.

Judging Criteria:


Overall attractiveness and aroma

Pastry: flaky, tender, properly done, and flavor

Filling: properly sweetened, thickness, and flavor


Shape, surface, volume, texture, color, and flavor


Texture, appearance, and taste


A combination of the above as applicable.
