BIG SANDY HERITAGE CENTER…Statewide, the State of Texas awarded four grants for ‘Adult Education and Fitness Centers’ and the City of Big Sandy was one of the recipients. Our building, located on East Gilmer Street (next door to the Fire Department), is under construction and has a tentative opening date of October 1st. In addition to adult education and fitness activities, the Center may be used for community meetings, receptions, etc. There will be space for two meeting rooms, a full kitchen, and a train viewing area.

While the grant covers construction, furnishings are not included and that is where your help is needed. Tables, kitchen items, one television and DVR (one has been donated by First Christian Church) are needed. Chairs are being donated by New Beginnings Christian Fellowship. Any donation of $50 or more for these items will be permanently recognized within the Center.

The Center will also feature two large porches where rocking chairs will be placed, along with a swing, a bench (donated by the Big Sandy Rotary Club) and planters. Cracker Barrel Old Country Store in Lindale and local company, Cracka Jack Engravers, have offered special pricing for this project. Plans are to purchase twelve (12 total and 6 have been donated) Cracker Barrel white rocking chairs with engraved brass plates recognizing the donors. The price of the chair and plate (including tax) is $170.

THE WALK OF REMEMBERANCE…A sidewalk on Wildcat Drive from W. West Street to W. College Street is planned (not a City-funded project). Metal benches made by the Big Sandy High School shop class will be placed along this area. The benches can be personalized via plasma-cutting. The first has been purchased by the Big Sandy Area Lions Club and will feature the Lions Club logo. The price of these benches is $200 each.

The City of Big Sandy is not seeking donations for either of these projects. These are requests made by private citizens to assist with keeping the project costs low. If you would like to donate or if you have any questions, please contact Linda Baggett lbaggett.thejournal@gmail.com.
