Vice President Bill Weaver, pastor of First Baptist Church, presided over the July meeting held at First United Methodist Church. Following the sharing of joys and concerns, Dr. Jack Hetzel, pastor of First Methodist opened with prayer.

Agape House Director Sharon Hill shared the volunteer hours and discussed food pantry needs…non-perishable items such as canned goods, rice, beans, etc. Treasurer Gay Ingram reported that June income (donations from churches, individuals, and businesses plus sales from the thrift store) were $1,069.58. Donations for June to the Building Fund totaled $620, bring that balance to $18,064.55.

Mayor Sonny Parsons gave the update on Community Service and City of Big Sandy activities: clean up efforts continue, city streets are being repaired, and water issues addressed. Mayor Parsons asked everyone to save the date – September 11th – for the annual ‘Honor Our Heroes’ supper, 6:30pm at New Beginnings Christian Fellowship. Wanda Bunn with the Love Big Sandy Project shared activities planned for the Big Sandy ‘Back to School Bash’ on Saturday August 11th. (see next week’s Journal for detailed information) Linda Baggett announced preparations were being made for the Annual Teacher/Staff Luncheon on Thursday, August 23rd and asked area churches to donate desserts.

Church updates included: Dr. Hetzel will be attending a planning meeting to discuss an area-wide crusade; Gospel Lighthouse’s Vicente Gutierrez leads services in Spanish Saturday nights at 7pm; Northeast Texas Cowboy Church (on FM 2911) continues their 12-step recovery program, “Learning the Ropes,” on Mondays 6:30pm; and everyone is invited to participate in the “School Prayer Walk” on Sunday, August 26th, 7pm. The next meeting is scheduled for 1:30pm on Wednesday, August 8th, at Sit’em Down Cowboy Church – 721 Dial Road. Area churches are invited to participate with the pastor and/or a lay-person representative. The Big Sandy Agape House is open on Monday and Wednesday, 8am-2pm.
