Volunteer firefighters make up two-thirds of the fighting forces in Texas. More than three-quarters of the almost 1800 fire departments scattered across the state are staffed by volunteer firefighters. Volunteer Fire Departments play a vital role in the protection of the rural areas of Texas. They are the first responders when wildland fires threaten homes, forests, and related natural resources. In addition, a well-equipped and properly trained fire department is a contributing factor to lower insurance premiums. Big Sandy Volunteer Fire Department members continue to train to keep updated on the latest fire prevention and firefighting techniques.
