With Halloween just around the corner, Mineola’s Lake Country Symphonic Band hits the stage October 21 and 23 for two concerts of music that will chill and thrill. “Things The Go Bump….” features music that is scary and just a wee bit on edge, from films to classical hits. Selections by John Williams will feature soundtrack music ominous and threatening from films like The Witches of Eastwick, The Empire Strikes Back, Dracula, War of the Worlds, and of course, Jaws. Composer Danny Elfman has a history of dark sounding scores with films like Dark Shadows, Batman, Corpse Bride and Willy Wonka. Mussorgsky’s Night on Bald Mountain was featured in the Disney animated classic, Fantasia, while Carl Orff’s collection of medieval poetry, Carmin Burana, has inspired frightening and intense film music for decades. Also on the program are In the Hall of the Mountain King by Norwegian composer Grieg; Dies Irae (Day of Wrath) from Verdi’s Requiem; Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf, featuring narration by local actor Jeff Hurley; and Procession of the Sorcerers, a piece that stirs the imagination with a musical parade of wizards and mythical beasts. A new arrangement of Texas, Our Texas, by Dallas Winds saxophonists Dave Lovrien, will also be performed, as well as a couple of patriotic selections from the band’s 4th of July concert for those that missed that fabulous presentation.
