Good Morning, Friends! Hope y’all had a great week and stayed as cool as possible. Personally, I’m thankful for the intermittent rain showers – not for the hair-curling humidity they bring, but it is mid-July and I haven’t had to water my yard!
We were saddened by the news that Mrs. Bowie passed on Friday, July 7th. I spoke with her daughter, Linda, last week and she said that services were set for Wednesday, July 19th. Mrs. Bowie was probably our most senior Big Sandy resident at 101 years. She’s now reunited with husband, Rev. Lindsay Bowie, and both with our Lord. Our love and prayers to the Bowie family.
We had a good meeting with the Ministerial Alliance last week (thanks to Pastor Liz Elkins and Gospel Lighthouse for hosting). Agape House director, Sharon Hill, announced a fundraiser for the Agape House building fund. As many of you know, land was donated on Groves Street for the construction of a new Agape House. The current facility is woefully inadequate and parking is even worse! Plans for the new Agape House address all areas – more room for the clothing store, a larger food pantry, storage, an office and meeting area. First Baptist Church in Big Sandy will graciously share their fellowship hall and kitchen for the event to be held on Saturday, August 26th. More information in the next few weeks.
If you weren’t at the Big Sandy Music Hall Saturday night you missed a fabulous performance by one of my favorite groups – the Stratoblasters! These guys are incredible! For more great music, head to Pritchett Friday night (July21st -7pm) for ‘Music and a Slice of Pie.” This is an annual event with the proceeds used to pay the insurance for the Community Center. Entertainment will be the East Mountain Gospel Bluegrass Band. Donations are accepted and fun is guaranteed!
We’ve got a bit of a change at the Porch. Summer hours will now be Tuesday through Saturday, 10am to 4pm. I’ve been out a couple days so I’ll catch up on our visitors next week. We receive new items every week and are anxious to share them with you. We’re looking forward to the school themed pieces…light weight winter scarfs, rain ponchos, cool leggings, and phone-friendly gloves (you can text while wearing them!)…in school colors of Big Sandy, Hawkins, Winona, Harmony, and Jarvis College. (oops? there’s that “shameless promotion again!”)
Well, guess that’s all for this week. Y’all be blessed, and as always -see you at Nanny’s Porch!
