Good morning, Friends, and Happy May! I’m hopeful that Mother Nature has finally checked the calendar and realized the temps should be getting warmer. Friday was great at The Porch. Many of our regulars dropped by and we had such great conversation. We love these folks.
Lot’s going on this past weekend. Rickey and Deb said Sit’em Down Cowboy Church’s Dog Wood Classic Bible Roping was a great success. Check their Facebook page for pictures and winners. Another success was the big event at Big Sandy Music Hall. “Floyd/Void – Pink Floyd Tribute Band” was awesome! Music from this iconic rock band, videos, and lasers…and the band members were beyond great! Andy and Kate Kirby, Brenda Barber, Doug Kunkowski, and Clay Jurenka, thanks for a memorable evening! Michael and I joined Kate and Andy at their home church – Holly Lake Church of Christ – for Sunday worship and lunch. We saw many old friends and met some new ones. We received warm welcomes from everyone and truly enjoyed the fellowship plus the beautiful voices of Kate, Andy, Brenda Barber, and Buzz Payne (aka First Verse).
Don’t forget that tomorrow (May 3rd) is NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER. Big Sandy’s gathering will be held at noon at First United Methodist Church and is nondenominational – all are encouraged to attend and be blessed.
The month of May kicks off with some fun – a “Concert in the Park” featuring the first ever in the history of BSISD BIG SANDY WILDCAT SWEEPSTAKES BAND! Saturday, May 5th from 1-4pm at the City Park on Wildcat Drive, you can enjoy the music of this remarkable group of young people and their equally remarkable leader, Mr. Grant Woodson. From their Facebook page: “We’ve had a great year! Sweepstakes win – that’s all 1’s, y’all! We’d like to celebrate with the first ever “Concert in the Park.” Come spread a blanket, bring your lawn chairs, have some lemonade, and enjoy the music of the award-winning Big Sandy Wildcat Band.” From all of the ex-Wildcat Band members: We are so proud of you!
And after you’ve spent the afternoon at the band concert, don’t rush home to cook supper. The Wildcat FFA invites you to their annual Fish Fry and Auction (also on Saturday, May 5th). The really tasty supper featuring fried catfish and all the fixings starts at 5:30pm and is FREE (but they won’t throw you out if you want to make a nice donation!). Auction kicks off at 6:30 and includes shop projects, floral projects, greenhouse plants, and donated items from very generous local businesses and community members. I haven’t confirmed this yet, but I’m pretty sure Anthony Betterton will serve as auctioneer for the evening. This event is lots of fun and you can help support our talented kids because all proceeds will benefit the Big Sandy FFA Chapter.
May 5th is a busy day and evening. New Beginnings Christian Fellowship will host “A Community Concert with Dr. Ross Jutsum” at the Church of God on West Broadway. Dr. Jutsum is an accomplished pianist and composer and his ministry “State of the Heart,” is dedicated to worship renewal and building bridges in the body of Christ. The concert begins at 7pm and is free.
Now for the “shameless promotion” you’ve been waiting for: Our plants are beautiful and we received another shipment of Art Pots, but they’ve been so popular that the selection is limited. Hurry by and get yours before they’re gone! Time to close and mow the back yard. Y’all be blessed, and as always…see you at Nanny’s Porch!
