GILMER–The Special Investigations Unit of the Upshur County Sheriff’s Office made six arrests, mostly on drug-related charges, as the result of making five traffic stops during June, Sheriff Larry Webb said Monday.
Details of the cases, based largely on information from sheriff’s Lt. Gary Shirley, were as follows, said Webb and James Grunden, chief deputy of the county jail:
Wendy Carpenter, 39, of White Oak, was arrested on three drug-related charges June 26 at the intersection of Silk Tree and Bayberry Roads in the West Mountain/Union Grove area.
Officers seized three types of drugs, resulting in her being charged with felony possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine), misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance (hydrocodone), and misdemeanor possession of marijuana–less than two ounces.
She was released from county jail that day on bonds set by Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Lyle Potter of $10,000 on the methamphetamine charge, $3,500 on the hydrocodone charge and $1,500 on the marijuana charge.
Angela Murrell, 38, of Gilmer, was arrested at the intersection of U.S. 271 and Taylor Street in Gilmer June 22 on an outstanding Upshur County warrant on a felony charge of engaging in organized criminal activity. She was also charged with misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.
She was released from county jail June 30 on bonds set by Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Wyone Manes of $75,000 on the felony charge and $500 on the other charge.
A 37-year-old Pittsburg woman was arrested June 7 on misdemeanor charges of having an invalid driver’s license with previous conviction, and possession of drug paraphernalia, at the intersection of U.S. 271 and Lantana Road.
She was released from county jail June 12 on public recognizance bonds (involving no money) set by Potter, who gave credit for time served on both offenses. This means she need not re-appear in court on the drug paraphernalia charge, but must on the license-related charge.
A 38-year-old Ore City man was arrested June 18 at the Cedar Springs boat ramp at Lake O’ The Pines on a charge of misdemeanor possession of marijuana–less than two ounces. He was also charged with misdemeanor failure to maintain financial responsibility (having legally-required vehicle insurance.)
He was freed June 22 on bonds set by Manes of $1,500 on the drug charge, and a personal recognizance bond on the other charge.
A 54-year-old Gilmer man and 52-year-old Gilmer woman were arrested June 21 on misdemeanor drug-related charges at the intersection of Texas 300 and FM 1844 in East Mountain.
The man, charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia, was released July 3 on bonds set by Manes of $1,500 on the marijuana charge, $500 on the paraphernalia charge.
The woman, charged with possession of (an unnamed) dangerous drug, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia, was also released July 3 on respective bonds set by Manes of $3,500, $1,500 and $500.
